You guys, I am so pumped for Amazon Prime Day happening tomorrow! You’ve heard about it, yes? It’s a one-day shopping event exclusively for Prime Members with even more deals than Black Friday! So what exactly does that mean and what should you expect on Wednesday? I’m gonna tell you below. But first, I have to tell you why I am an Amazon Prime junkie and why I think it’s a necessity for mamas!
The biggest benefit of Amazon Prime is definitely the free two-day shipping (and now even free same-day delivery on qualifying orders in certain cities, say what???). When I was a new mom, I can’t even tell you how much of a life saver this was. I was placing orders weekly (sometimes more) for tons of random baby items at all hours of the day and night – nursing pads, pacifiers, extra sheets, onesies, bottles, pumping supplies, and the list goes on – and was able to receive my items in just two days. Getting out of the house those first months completely overwhelmed me (thanks for the broken tailbone during delivery, Mae!) and Amazon Prime was my BFF. Seriously.
The fast & free shipping is worth it enough for me, but there’s lots of other benefits for parents too! Like unlimited streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows (including tons of options for kids – like Dora!), unlimited photo storage to Amazon Cloud Drive, & early access to select Lightening Deals. Plus you’ll get ad-free music streaming and you get to borrow a book each month through the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. (You can see all the benefits here.)
You’ll also need Amazon Prime to be a member of Amazon Mom (after your free 30-day trial period), which offers 20% off diapers with a Subscribe & Save subscription, a 15% baby registry completion discount, and access to exclusive Amazon Mom discounts & deals. Amazon Mom doesn’t cost anything in addition to your Amazon Prime membership, but you do have to formally sign up.
Amazon Prime has been so worth it to us. We more than get our $99 back in benefits each year. So if you’ve been tempted to give it a try, do it! The first 30 days are free so you have nothing to lose (just be sure to cancel before you’re charged for your second month). Plus you have to be a member to have access to Amazon Prime Day tomorrow, which leads me to exactly what I know…
Amazon Prime Day!
I’ve gotten lots of questions about Amazon Prime Day happening Wednesday, so here’s what I know. Amazon is turning 20 this week and they’re celebrating by having a huge one-day shopping event for Prime Members with exclusive deals on electronics, toys, back-to-school supplies, sports, clothing, & more. The deals will start at midnight tonight (12pm PST) and will include seven Deals of the Day as well as thousands of Lightening Deals (and of course all deals will have free two-day shipping).
If you’re new to Amazon bargain shopping, here’s how it works. Deals of the Day are Amazon’s daily deals. They typically have two per day, but for Prime Day they’re having seven! The deals go live at midnight and last all day or until the designated quantity sells out (which often happens first). I expect the seven Deals of the Day tomorrow will be big-ticket items like TVs, electronics, or camping equipment.
Lightning Deals are similar to Deals of the Day, but there are multiple products in a variety of categories that go live hourly throughout the day for a short period of time. For Prime Day, Amazon is having thousands of Lightning Deals starting every ten minutes. These go fast too (sometimes in under a minute, the stress!) so if you want something, set a timer and be aaaaaaall over that. My guess is the Lightening Deals will be the best place to score deals on toys and baby gear. Since there will be a ridiculous amount of Lightening Deals going live tomorrow, you can search active or upcoming deals in a variety of categories (baby, toys & games, girls’ fashion, etc) on the Lightening Deals page (UPDATE! Amazon is already updating deals going live in the middle of the night!). (And just so you know, if an item sells out at the lightening price, you may have the option to join a wait list. If purchases aren’t completed by customers in 15 minutes, you’ll receive an alert in the upper right-hand corner that the deal is available to you.)
Amazon has been pretty hush-hush about specifics & brands on some of the deals, but here is a sneak peek for those that are curious! Black Friday was amazing for baby deals, so fingers crossed there’s a pile of those tomorrow too.

The full press release by Amazon is here and you can keep an eye on the Amazon Prime Day page here. And until Prime Day officially kicks off at 12pm PST, you can see the upcoming Lightening Deals as they’re being loaded here (you know, to see if there’s anything worth staying awake for!). And of course I’ll be on my computer at midnight price-checking (to make sure those good deals are really good deals, sneaky Amazon) and compiling the best for you.
Per Amazon, all Prime members can participate in Prime Day, including free trial members, invited guests of other members, Prime Fresh members, Amazon Mom and Amazon Student members.
(And FYI, not to be beat by Amazon, Walmart has now announced their own version of Prime Day with 2,000 online rollbacks in a variety of categories beginning this week. Plus they’ll be reducing their free-shipping minimum from $50 to $35.)
